Do you wear lots of neutrals? Black, white, grey, navy? Yep, that’s most of us then. And you do sometimes wish you had a magic wardrobe ingredient that added colour, without being too in your face and statementy? Again, I suspect most of us. Well, in those ‘all my clothes look so drab and boring’ moments, when you want a dash – not a whacking great dollop – of colour, an on-the-small-side-but-still-practical red handbag is your friend.
While I’ve had many a daydream where I have to choose between Gucci’s Soho (around £800) and Marmont (around £1,000), my handbag reality is more high street than high end.

If you fancy either of the stunners above, get yourself onto Selfriges.com immediately and leave the rest of us to stew in our jealousy while we look at some more realistic options.
The Classic One
My top pick. The Jess flap over leather bag from Watson & White I loved it so much I bought it and I haven’t stopped using it since. It has a zip closure and two internal pockets. The strap is adjustable. I wear it cross body for marching around town. At £50, it is one of my best buys this year.

The Statement One
The colour of The Gigi from Aurora London is vibrant and poppy, in both senses of the word. It is made from grained leather and has a matching tassel. It’s gorgeous and has a similar feel as the Gucci Soho, but for a far less eye watering £95. Add your initials for £22.

The Bargain One
La Redoute’s rectangular leather bag has gold hardware and an adjustable strap. As I write, it’s included in the 40% off Black Friday deal, bringing the price down from £69 to £41.40. If you want a bit of the red bag trend without blowing the budget, this is a steal. (The link goes to the black version only. You can switch the colour onscreen.)

The Vegan One
I can feel my vegan sister (she’s real, not imaginary) sitting on my shoulder when I write my posts, so I searched for a bag she would wear with pride. LaBante London has been named by The Telegraph and The Independent as a vegan fashion brand to watch. The Serin is quilted on both sides and has a magnetic closure. The gold-coloured chain is removable and it has a wristlet. It’s priced at £49 and has a slightly geometric 80s feel that’s perfect for now.

The Playful One
& Other Stories has rocked mid-priced bags since its launch. Every season, the range grows and becomes more confident. The £99 Leather Bucket Bag has gold-toned handles and a removable shoulder strap. It’s small, but I love the fact it stands up all on its own. Not sure what that makes me so happy, but it does.

The Boxy One
Again, from & Other Stories, the Golden Lock Leather Bag is a mini marvel. It looks more expensive than its £89 piece tag suggests and, if you want some evening bling, this one could be your new obsession.

I took a pic of the & Other Stories bags (and a mystery piggy-in-middle that doesn’t appear online) instore as the colours looked so zingy.
I’d love to know what you think of the red bag round-up and if there are any other fashion or beauty topics you’d like me to cover. I’m looking at bras for big boobs and grey root cover-ups soon so if you have any recommendations, please get in touch.
